Participate in Clarion 2010 without Leaving Home!

Inspired and abetted by Clarion West, where they've been running Write-a-Thons successfully for several years, the three Clarions (Clarion UCSD, Clarion West, and Clarion South) ran Write-a-Thon fundraisers this summer, egging each other on and sharing resources.

What is a write-a-thon, anyway? Think charity walk-a-thon. In a walk-a-thon, volunteers agree to walk as far as they can in return for pledges from sponsors, who agree to donate to a charity, usually based on the number of miles the volunteer walks. Our Write-a-Thon works the same way, except instead of walking or running, our volunteers write with a goal in mind. In return, sponsors make donations to Clarion, sometimes based on number of words written, sometimes based on other goals, sometimes just to show support for the writer and Clarion.

We are delighted to report that our the first annual Clarion UCSD Write-a-Thon, which took place at the same time as the 2010 Clarion Workshop -- June 27 to August 7, 2010 -- was an enormous success, earning $11,400 for Clarion, well over our $10,000 goal. Thank you to our 76 incredibly dedicated writer participants, and our 244 sponsors, listed below.

Special thanks and congratulations to our top-earning writer, Ferret Steinmetz, who garnered $1,667.50 for Clarion and won an Apple iPad for his efforts. Special thanks as well to our second and third-place earners, Gregory Frost ($1,072.42) and Mishell Baker ($641.92).

We would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped make the Write-a-Thon happen this year, particularly our co-directors Karen Joy Fowler and Leslie What, our tireless communications director Mishell Baker, sleepless webmaster Justin Whitney, awesome database keeper Shauna Roberts, thank-you note writer Karen Best, and treasurer Nancy Etchemendy.
